Portland Game Plan Event – Live Tony Horton Workouts

For those of you that don’t know what a “Game Plan Event” is, let me fill you in. Team Beachbody puts on Game Plan Events for Team Beachbody Coaches to give them training on how to optimize their business and spread the word of fitness using the “Game Plan” (a ten point process developed by Larry Zimberg). The events are usually hosted by a Diamond or Star Diamond level Beachbody Coach and usually involve a workout or two (sometimes led by a coach and sometimes led by one of Beachbody’s fitness trainers) as well as some great training and some Shakeology tasting.

This was my first Game Plan Event and actually my first real Beachbody event since becoming a coach back in April of 2010. I have wanted to go to several other events but my schedule just doesn’t allow for traveling for this stuff very often given that I have a full-time job and a triathlon coaching business and a family. However, since this event was in Portland (just a 3 hour drive from where I live) and my wife has family there, we were able to make the trip and kill 2 birds with one stone.

The Event:

The event started on Friday night with a business opportunity presentation to give all of the guests that aren’t already Beachbody Coaches an introduction to what it means to be a Beachbody Coach. The presentation was given by the inspirational Mike French and Aaron Mathis. Several people became coaches that night and started their journey to becoming physically AND financially fit.

Following the business opportunity presentation (and a Shakeology tasting), Mr. P90X himself, Tony Horton came out and led a great UCML (Upper/Cardio/Middle/Lower) workout. 300 people in a large hotel conference room worked out as Tony Horton led us through about 5 rounds of great P90X-like moves. Each round started with an upper body move that was usually some variation on the standard pushup (example: Two-Dog Push ups – Do a military pushup and go directly into upward dog and then another pushup directly into downward dog). The second move, the cardio, was usually some type of mixed martial arts move like jab-cross-hook-uppercut. The third move was all about the core with moves like “Banana Crunch” and “up-down-open-close”. The final move of each round was a variation of plyometric and lower body movements like the lunges that are in the video I took during the event. These were awesome! Of course, they were not that difficult for me since I was filming most of the time, but I did leave the camera on in the middle while I was doing the move so you would know that I did actually do some of them too.

Anyway, the Friday night workout (as well as the business presentation) was awesome and well-organized. After the workout, I went up and got a good picture with Mike French as both of us were wearing our Vibram Five Fingers during the workout.

Saturday morning began with the “Game Plan Training”. Denise Needham from the corporate office, who is an incredibly talented and charismatic speaker, gave an excellent training on how to follow the game plan and do this business well. The only thing I didn’t like about the training was that she spoke from 9am to 12pm with no scheduled breaks! Holy smokes! Who speaks for 3 hours without a break!

Ok, actually she only spoke to about 11:45am and then they did some coach recognition, gave away some prizes, and made some announcements….but still.

Then we had an hour to go grab some lunch and then it was back with Tony Horton in the afternoon. Tony started the afternoon at 1pm with his “Cycle of Success” presentation where he gave his formula for success which included advice that applies not just to fitness or being involved with Team Beachbody but also to just being successful in life in general. Hit presentation was inspiring, funny, and engaging (imagine that). Some of the things he said:

Ask for what you want! If you want something from someone, don’t beat around the bush…just ask for what you want or need.

Do crazy things that don’t kill you! Tony is all about doing things that take you out of your comfort zone as long as they don’t kill you. This applies to your fitness (quit doing the things that you are good at all the time and work on the things that you can’t do…yet) as well as the rest of your life

Lighten up a little! You can’t take life too seriously and always care about what people think of you. Every once in a while you have to jump around on stage like a crazy person and not care what people think and have the ability to laugh at or with yourself.

After Tony’s presentation, it was time for workout #2! This time it was Yoga which has become one of my favorite workouts. I was very excited to do a Tony Horton Yoga workout live. Oh, shoot, I almost forgot…in between the workout and the presentation, I was able to get a picture with the man. Check it out below!

Me and Tony!

The Yoga workout was amazing. He brought out some new moves that were incredibly difficult as well as some old favorites and it felt amazing!

After the workout, Carl Daikeler (the company CEO) gave an inspiring presentation on his vision for the company moving forward from here. It was very cool to see his passion for changing the obesity trend in this country and the ideas that he has for using Team Beachbody and the huge group of coaches being built to reverse the trend. I am excited to be a part of it!

After Carl was finished and the event was over, Tony was bombarded with people wanting pictures and such so I didn’t get any more time with the man but I did meet some great people and made some good contacts.

If you are a Beachbody coach or you are thinking about becoming one, I highly recommend attending a game plan training event (even if Tony doesn’t happen to be scheduled to be there). You won’t regret it.
