I was a little bummed when I heard that we wouldn’t get the program until Christmas because I was planning on doing the program this fall. However, it will just make Christmas that much better and I will be ready to start the program at the beginning of the year in excellent shape after doing the Ultimate P90X Hybrid program that I designed.  If you are planning on doing P90X2 when it comes out, you have a chance right now to start a new round of P90X and get yourself in excellent shape for the arrival of P90X2…so get out there and bring it.

Is P90X2 only for people that have done P90X?

No, P90X2 is not intended to be harder than P90X…just better. How will it be better? Here is how…

Muscle Confusion or Periodization: Periodization (and Muscle Confusion as P90X talks about) are slightly different concepts but there are many similar principles. Triathletes and endurance athletes use Periodization to break up the training season into different periods where you work on specific areas (base aerobic fitness, speed and muscular endurance building, peak racing period, off-season recovery, etc). In P90X, the program was broken into three phases to “confuse” the muscles and keep them from adapting and being able to plateau. The problem with either of these concepts is that it takes different people different amounts of time to properly move from phase to phase. Some endurance athletes may need more work on base aerobic fitness than others. That is what a coach does for you…they monitor your fitness level and plan your program accordingly instead of just giving you a cookie-cutter plan for any athlete. In the same way, some people that start P90X may need more time in phase I before moving to phase II but that is not written into the plan. P90X2 changes all that. This is not a cookie-cutter plan…it uses flexible training periods to maximize your results.

For this reason, it is highly recommended that you work with an experienced Beachbody Coach that can help you decide how to use the program effectively. Here are the Phases that you will see in P90X2:

Phase I – Foundation: 3-5 weeks

In Phase I of P90X2, the base training phase, you can expect to:

  • Move Better
  • Feel Better
  • Reduce Likelihood of Injury

 This Phase is really about building up fitness in your stabilizing muscles. The goal is to fix imbalances that most of us have and get you ready for Phase II.

Phase II – Strength: 3-6 weeks

This phase is going to be difficult…but remember, we only move on to this phase when you are ready based on your performance. You will be ready when you move on from Phase I.

In Phase II of P90X2 you can expect to:

  • Get stronger through wider range of motion
  • Get more supple (I didn’t make that up)
  • Look good (didn’t make that up either…straight from Beachbody)

P90X2 will combine strength and stability in a very intense way. Get ready to work hard.

Phase III – Performance: 3-4 weeks

Performance? When I think of performance, I think of results from a race and how I felt during that race. I measure my performance by how fast I am in my races (mostly triathlons) and also how I feel while I am racing. Same thing here in P90X2.

In Phase III of P90X2 you can expect to:

  • Jump higher, run faster, ride faster and be more explosive
  • Start to feel like a kid again

This is the Phase when the P90X2 workout employs P.A.P. or Post Activation Potential. P.A.P. is fascinating. P.A.P. works in conditioned athletes only, so you don’t want to even attempt this type of workout until you’ve done the work in the other Phases or you could get hurt. P.A.P. increases the production of muscle cell motor units adding explosive power. P90X2 will have you doing a weighted resistance exercise prior to an explosive exercise. That type of training results in amazing muscle growth. Beachbody knew this type of training would require some expert input, so they brought in Dr. Marcus Elliott of P3 (Peak Performance Project). Dr. Elliott works with professional athletes and has them doing a lot of P.A.P. workouts. He was the first to point out that this type of training is great, but the body needs to be conditioned in order to be able to perform at this level.

I simply can’t wait to get to this phase…but I will do the work to get there first.

Nutrition Guide

It’s going to be very different from the P90X Nutrition Guide, because it will be broader in scope. The P90X2 Nutrition Guide will cater to vegans, vegetarians, pescitarians, paleo (yes) and an assortment of other nutritional theories. Basically its going to be fully comprehensive nutrition for you, depending on how you want to eat. There are 27 diet guides in the P90X2 Nutrition Guide. How cool is that?

P90X2 Base Package:

This includes all of the workouts except those listed above as “Deluxe Pack”, the Nutrition Guide, a Workout Guide and a 90 day calendar.

P90X2 Deluxe Package:

This pack includes everything in the Base Package, but adds the V Sculpt and X2 Chest + Shoulders + Tris workouts and a foam roller, two medicine balls, and a large stability ball.  The foam roller is going to incorporated into a couple of programs, but you’ll see it in the X2 Recovery and Mobility section in particular. It helps iron out the kinks. I have been using a foam roller for my ITB (google it) for 3 years and it works wonders.

P90X2 Ultimate Package:

The Ultimate Package gives you everything in the Deluxe Pack and upgrades the foam roller as shown in the picture below. The Ultimate Pack also adds a set of Tony Horton’s Power Stands to the party. These are really good for pushups and shoulder moves like Pike Presses.
