I am Ryan Chapman and I am an avid triathlete, an Independent Beachbody Coach, a certified Total Immersion Teaching Professional, a certified USAT Level I triathlon coach, a Heart Zones Certified Personal Trainer, a mechanical engineer, a husband, and a father of beautiful twin girls.

My Fitness Journey

Yes, that actually is a picture of me on the left above (scroll to the bottom for a video with more pics)!  That picture was taken just before I graduated from Montana State University in May of 2003. At that point in my life, I was in the worst shape of my life and had little hope for ever being fit. I had spent the previous 15+ years battling my weight and it was obvious that I wasn’t winning the battle. After this picture was taken, I took a job in Bremerton, Washington, and actually gained even more weight over the next 6 months. So, 6 months into my career as a mechanical engineer, I was 5’-10” tall and weighed in at 275 pounds! I knew I had to do something, but I didn’t have the motivation.

In January of 2004, I went on a ski trip with my folks in Whitefish, Montana. At the end of the trip, I had a conversation with my Dad in the airport and we agreed to keep each other accountable by emailing our daily eating journal back and forth every day. Over the next 4 or 5 months, I lost about 45 pounds by reducing my calories and playing racquetball 5 days a week. After that, I stalled for a while and actually gained back 5 or 10 pounds.

Then, in 2005, I started a weight loss contest with a colleague of mine. From January of 2005 – May of 2005 I lost around 50 pounds. Again, I used a reduced calorie diet along with a healthy dose of racquetball for the first half of the contest. Then, about half way through the contest, my colleague told me that he was planning to do a triathlon with some friends in July. At the time, I thought all triathlons were like the Ironman…crazy! However, I found out that the triathlon he was planning to do was a sprint triathlon (1/2 mile swim, 12 mile bike, 5K run). I ended up signing up with him and training for the triathlon along with continuing to play racquetball. When I crossed the finish line of that first triathlon, I was hooked.

The Triathlon Pure Period

For the next 4 years following my first taste of triathlon, I did little other than swim, bike, and run (for fitness anyway…obviously I did other things, unless you ask my wife). I planned 2 or 3 triathlons a year, as well as a few running races for 2006-2009, and had a blast getting faster and more fit.  The picture on the right above was taken after completing my first half ironman in 2008.

However, I knew that something was missing. I had heard of the benefits of strength training and core work to improve performance in triathlon but had yet to really try it. Being a person with limited time, as most of us are, I felt that the swim, bike, run components of my training plan were more important and that, if I were to leave something out, it would just have to be strength training.

Along Came Tony Horton

Following my last triathlon in August of 2009, I decided to take a little break from all of the triathlon training and do something that I could do indoors and in less time (theoretically). This was driven by one major factor: My wife and I had just had twin girls…so training time away from home was limited. I figured it was a good time to check out this strength training thing. So I picked up a copy of P90X and got my butt kicked by Tony Horton every day for the next 90 days. I finished P90X at the end of 2009 and was amazed at the results. Not only was I leaner and stronger but I could actually run faster! I ran a 5K race right near the end of P90X and ran a personal best by over 2 minutes. Amazing considering that I only ran about once a week during the program.

Beachbody Coaching

Following my first round of P90X, having been so amazed by the effect on my running speed, I put together an 8-week training program to lower my 5K time by even more. The program combines speed interval training and various other running workouts with some of the P90X workouts. Using this program, I lowered my time by another minute. During this same time, I was also recommending Beachbody Products to my family members and friends and watching them achieve great results. So, in February of 2010, I decided to sign up to become an Independent Beachbody Coach so that I could get paid to help others get in shape and take advantage of some of the lessons that I have learned over the last 20+ years of battling with weight and fitness.

In March of 2010, I launched B.A.S.E. Training. This is my new dream. In this dream I have combined my passion for triathlon, my passion for and belief in Beachbody Products (specifically P90X), and my passion for helping people lose weight.

    I recently completed my first total immersion workshop and have been getting to the pool about twice a week starting to go the drills. I like your three top tips to improve the overall experience in the water.

    How can I motivate a 60year old brother who weighs close to the 275 you were and is having hip problems and is unmotivated and depressed.
